Preserved_Specimen Scabrous subshrubs 50-100 cm tall; flowers discoid. Erect, taprooted annuals with a sturdy, 4-5 mm thick stem, glabrate below, becoming scabrous and pubescent above. Leaves opposite, rhombic; petioles 0.8-1.2 cm long, scabrous and pubescent; blades 5-7 cm long x 2-3.5 cm wide, 3-veined from base, scabrous and pubescent above, pubescent below, margins serrate, olive green. Inflorescences corymbiform with a single long-peduncled capitula arising from the center of each branch division, forming loosely open, few-flowered corymbs at branch tips. Peduncles 2-4 cm long x 0.5 mm wide, scabrous and pubescent. Capitulae 6-7 mm long x 6-7 mm wide, discoid. Involucral bracts in 2 rows 5-6 mm long x 2-2.5 mm wide, rounded to obtusely pointed at tips, 3-5-veined with scabrous hairs. Outer bracts with divergent tips that are darker and hairier. Disk florets 8-11, surrounded by conduplicate, scarious palea that have ca 5 aristate points at the end of each vein. Florets tiny, 4-lobed, white, smooth and apparently functionally male. Cypselas 4 mm long x 1-1.5 mm wide, laterally compressed with a raised medial ridge, dark brown with shieldlike, pointed shoulders, glabrous.
